The Hollywoodrath school project in Dublin 15 demonstrates how Modern Methods of Construction can be applied at scale to deliver complex, permanent education infrastructure for the public sector.

Designed and constructed for the Department of Education and Youth by Actavo, the project spans 4,223 sqm, making it the largest modular school building delivered by the State to date. Completed in approximately 14 months, the school provides 24 classrooms, two SEN classrooms and a range of associated facilities, supporting modern teaching, accessibility and long-term use.

Sustainability was embedded in the design approach. The roofscape integrates photovoltaic panels, generating renewable energy and reducing operational carbon over the building’s lifecycle. The external envelope combines high-performance brick slip and rendered facades, standing seam cladding and louvred curtain walling, balancing durability, performance and architectural quality. Integrated modular bike storage and a covered walkway further support sustainable transport and site usability.

Internally, the building is organised in a figure-eight configuration, promoting clear circulation, inclusivity and ease of movement. A naturally lit entrance atrium with floor-to-ceiling curtain walling creates a calm, welcoming arrival space, supported by acoustic panelling to manage noise levels. Teaching spaces are designed to support diverse learning needs, with consistent use of colour coding, pastel finishes and strong natural light to aid orientation, concentration and wellbeing.

Classrooms are equipped with smartboards, high-performance aluminium windows and MVHR ventilation to maintain a comfortable learning environment. SEN accommodation includes dedicated rooms designed around sensory comfort, safety and accessibility, including soft padded spaces and secure access control.

Delivered using enhanced modular construction, the Hollywoodrath project illustrates how MMC can support the delivery of large, high-quality education buildings with reduced programme risk, improved environmental performance and design outcomes aligned with the future needs of Ireland’s education sector.
