I am a Project Manager with G-Frame, an Irish-owned engineering contractor specialising exclusively in pure mass timber and hybrid mass timber structures. My role sits at the intersection of design, engineering, manufacture and site delivery, helping clients and design teams realise the full potential of modern methods of construction through the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam and hybrid timber solutions.
At G-Frame, we believe successful MMC projects are fundamentally design-led. The greatest opportunities for programme certainty, manufacturing efficiency, carbon reduction and quality are achieved when timber is considered from the earliest stages of design rather than treated as a late-stage material substitution.
Our focus is on integrating design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) principles from concept through completion, ensuring projects are optimised not only for construction, but for the entire delivery process. As Ireland's sole approved participant in the Stora Enso Partner Network 2026 - 2027, we combine international expertise with local project delivery knowledge to support clients in delivering high-performance, sustainable buildings across education, residential, healthcare and commercial sectors.
What excites me most.... MMC allows us to rethink how buildings are delivered rather than simply improving traditional construction.
For decades, the industry has accepted waste, delays and unpredictability as being part of the standard process. MMC challenges the mindset, of 'this is how we've always done it'. By moving more activity into controlled manufacturing environments and integrating design, engineering and delivery teams earlier, we can achieve significantly better outcomes in terms of quality, safety, programme & cost certainty along with sustainability targets.
Mass timber is particularly exciting because it combines these efficiencies with a genuinely compelling environmental story. It allows us to create beautiful, highly engineered structures while reducing embodied carbon and improving construction performance.
There's also something deeply satisfying about seeing months of detailed digital planning translated into a structure that can emerge on site in a matter of days rather than months.
One milestone that reflects our direction as a company is the continued growth of G-Frame's role in delivering increasingly complex mass timber projects across Ireland and the UK.
What makes these projects particularly rewarding is not simply the scale of the structures, but the level of collaboration required between architects, engineers, manufacturers and contractors. Successfully delivering mass timber projects demands early engagement, technical integration and a willingness to challenge traditional procurement and construction approaches.
A significant achievement for the business has been our recognition as Ireland's sole participant in the Stora Enso Partner Network, providing our clients with direct access to international best practice, technical expertise and supply chain knowledge whilst maintaining local project delivery capability.
This positions us to help shape the next generation of modern timber buildings in Ireland.
The opportunity and the challenge are actually closely linked.
Ireland urgently needs more schools, homes, healthcare facilities and public infrastructure. MMC has the potential to help address this demand through faster, more predictable and more sustainable delivery.
The challenge is that procurement models and project teams do not always engage with MMC early enough. Too often, projects are designed conventionally and only later explore whether MMC can be incorporated.
To fully unlock the benefits of MMC, we need greater awareness that design decisions made during the earliest stages of a project significantly influence programme, cost, carbon and manufacturing efficiency. The most successful projects are those where architects, engineers, clients and specialist MMC contractors collaborate from the outset.
The industry is moving in that direction, and that presents a significant opportunity for Ireland.
Be curious and spend time understanding the entire process, not just your individual discipline.
MMC rewards people who can think beyond traditional project boundaries. Understanding how design decisions affect manufacturing, logistics, installation and building performance will make you a far more effective professional.
I would also encourage young professionals to spend time on site and in manufacturing facilities. Digital models are incredibly powerful, but there is no substitute for seeing how buildings are actually assembled.
Finally, don't be afraid to challenge established thinking. Many of the practices that are accepted as normal in construction exist simply because "that's how we've always done it." MMC continues to evolve because people are willing to ask whether there might be a better way.
Outside work, I am passionate about adventure motorcycling and exploring remote places on two wheels. I enjoy the challenge of planning and undertaking long-distance solo off-road journeys where preparation, adaptability and problem-solving matter just as much as the distance travelled.
There are more similarities between adventure riding and construction than people might expect. Whether delivering a mass timber project or navigating a remote mountain track, the outcome is usually determined long before you arrive. Good planning, understanding risk, working with capable people and remaining calm when things become uncertain are skills that transfer surprisingly well between both worlds.
My next goal is an expedition linking Morocco's High Atlas Mountains and into the deserts of Southern Morocco, with the ambition of continuing onwards into Mauritania. The main difference is that when a camel blocks your path, at least it's obvious who's causing the delay.
