Message from CEO, Paul Tierney

Firstly I want to thank the membership for your continued support throughout the year on behalf of myself, Katie and Carol. Our job is to represent your interests, to promote your businesses and assist you with any of the requests you send our way. With Anna joining us, we will add to the member experience and will announce the first of our plans in January. For an organisation that is just over two years old, we have achieved so much: Our membership year in numbers 2024- https://mmcireland.ie/mmc-ireland-our-members-year-in-number-2024/ 

We are now the go-to industry body for all MMC advice and from 2025 we will sit at the Government’s MMC Leadership and Integration Group, giving us a strong voice at the decision making table of MMC development in Ireland. It was a significant milestone to submit our first pre-budget submission this year and the publication of NESC’s MMC Report, with so much input from MMC Ireland members is also a landmark achievement. Most importantly, it was great to publish our member’s first Technical Catalogue. The feedback from all parties has been excellent and a copy of the catalogue will be sent to all Local Authorities in the country in the New Year. This will become an annual publication but the online version is readily accessible and as your company circumstances change, please let us know and we will update your info online.    

We have two significant Government MMC procurements coming to the market in 2025, the Dept of Education and the HSE. The Dept of Ed. Is a potential €1 billion 3D Volumetric opportunity and the HSE will be of a similar magnitude, albeit through a different procurement route. It is vitally important we get feedback and insights from you to allow us represent you for your benefit. We have an important opportunity to shape what the next number of years look like in this space and your involvement. We will pick this up early in the New Year.

It was great to see those of you who were at the EY event last week and then for some food and drinks afterwards. It was important to hear what submissions have been made to Government around MMC Procurement by EY and a lot align with the comments from members on the day as well as submissions made by you on the member’s portal. I want to thank Pat Kirwan for presenting the member’s feedback and if you want your voice to be heard please go onto the members portal with your comments or email me directly and I can collate. Our recommendations will be submitted to Government in January.

We are submitting our key recommendations for the new Programme for Government to the key negotiators forming the new Government before Christmas. If you would like to add anything to this document please email me directly or add it to the whiteboard on the members portal.

As stated in last month’s newsletter, next year’s MMC Ireland National Conference takes place in The Johnstown Estate on March 11th and 12th. We are in the process of shaping the themes and speakers for the day and a half conference and if you have any requests or recommendations please email them to me directly or email info@mmcireland.com. 

Anna will be in touch in January to arrange to meet as many of you as soon as possible in 2025. And lastly from me, I would like to thank the Board for their support, but more importantly I want to thank Katie and Carol for everything they have done for myself and the members this year, it is greatly appreciated.

Have Your Say – Public Sector Procurement

EY has recently been appointed by the Government to further develop and deliver on the six key recommendations contained in their recent report – ‘Skills for Modern Methods of Construction’. Given the expertise of its members, MMC Ireland is one of the key stakeholders assisting in this initiative.

One of the key recommendations, ‘Knowledge for Senior Management’, will focus on the gaps that can exist in public sector clients/contracting authorities (including at times an inconsistent view and misunderstanding of MMC), and the optimal ways to procure and deliver MMC projects. 

As key stakeholders, MMC Ireland members have the opportunity to highlight how public sector clients should procure MMC projects, highlighting and protecting the good practices that already exist, using the structures currently in place while also putting forward a set of recommendations to improve potential knowledge gaps and deliver a more appropriate procurement process.

MMC Ireland has developed a collaboration tool to capture members’ comments and suggestions split across different sectors to recognise the differences in existing procurement requirements across each. The Policy working group will collate all comments/suggestions into a clear and concise insights document, which will be presented to EY at the 12th Dec and be circulated to all members.
